Internships & placements
First year summer internship
Salary
- £350 per week plus territorial allowance where applicable
The role
We were the first bank to offer a first year summer placement. Based for seven weeks in one of our UK branches (we'll do our best to offer you a convenient location), this isn’t about giving you a project to tackle. It’s about putting you into the team, and giving you first-hand experience of working directly with our customers. As such, the programme will give you both some exciting and challenging work experience, and the chance to explore our world of work and opportunities.
You’ll receive:
- Induction training
- Hands-on experience and on-the-job learning in your team
- Regular feedback to help you develop
- Real-life work, to build your business skills
If all goes well, there’s the opportunity to go on to complete an internship in a different business area after your penultimate year of study, or to attend a graduate assessment centre – a big step towards joining one of our graduate programmes after university. Both come with incentives. If you take up a position on our penultimate year summer internship, we will give you a £1,000 bursary. If you are successful at the graduate assessment centre, we will pay you a further £2,000 when you join us.
Entry requirements
To join the programme you will need:
- To currently be an undergraduate – either in your first year at university, or second year if yours is a four-year course
- A minimum 2.1 honours degree or equivalent (predicted). This can be in any discipline
- A minimum of grade C for both Mathematics and English Language GCSE (or equivalent)
- A minimum of one position of responsibility held at university or school (e.g. Vice-President of a society, Team Captain, Secretary, Treasurer etc.)
- A minimum of two months' customer-related work experience. This could include face-to-face or telephone contact with the public/customers/clients. It can be part-time or voluntary and need not be over a continuous two month period
- The right to work in the UK without the need for an Employer's Sponsorship Certificate. (If you are unsure, please visit the UK Border Agency website at www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk). For this role, HSBC is unable to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship
