Internships & placements
** We are currently restructuring our IT function and want to make sure we recruit the right people with the right skills sets to ensure we remain at the forefront of bank technology in the future. Because of this we are reviewing our IT graduate and placement programmes and will not be accepting applications to join these programmes in 2009 **
IT one-year placement programme
This year-long programme will see you work as part of a team on real projects and take responsibility for achieving set targets in one of our IT Centres in Sheffield, Tankersley on the outskirts of Sheffield, London, Birmingham, Leeds or Stirling.
Induction training
The placement programme starts with a three-week induction at our Global IT Development Centre in Sheffield, where you'll learn about HSBC, the IT division and the role you will be undertaking.
During your induction, you will also receive training in technical and presentation skills, management leadership, methodologies, structured problem solving, validating data, testing, and operations and networks.
On-the-job learning
After your induction, you will complete two six-month rotations in our key IT areas, gaining experience in two of the following areas: Analysis, Development, Testing, Operations
and Telecommunications.
Throughout the programme, your line manager will ensure that you are challenged sufficiently to ensure your continuing development.
This will involve completing training courses relevant to the roles you are assigned. For example, if you are involved in a programming project, you will undertake programming courses as well as developing your IT project management skills.
After the programme
If, at the end of the placement programme, we believe that you have been a consistently excellent performer, we may invite you to attend the IT graduate assessment centre, which can result in a position on the full-time IT graduate programme when you finish university.
Salary
Salaries for this programme start at £18,250 per annum outside of London; £19,619 plus territorial allowance of up to £4,000 within London.
Minimum requirements
Before applying, it's important to make sure that you meet the minimum requirements of the placement.
To join the IT one-year placement programme you will need:
- To be an undergraduate student due to graduate in 2011.
- To be starting your industrial placement in the next academic year as part of your degree.
- A minimum 2.1 honours degree or equivalent (predicted) in an IT-related discipline.
- Legal entitlement to work in the UK at all times during your employment. (We will not be able to sponsor you for a work permit and reserve the right to terminate your employment with immediate effect if for any reason you are no longer entitled to work in the UK.)
- A minimum of grade C for both Mathematics and English Language GCSE (or equivalent).
