FAQs
Can you ever have all the answers? Or is there always one more question to ask?
How many graduates are you recruiting this year?
We'll recruit around 140 graduates across our UK programmes and approximately 30 to our European Management scheme. We'll also recruit around 70 undergraduates for our UK Summer Internship programme.
Can I apply to more than one of HSBC's graduate programmes?
The programmes offer very different opportunities. It is unlikely that more than one will fit your career preferences. Identify the most suitable programme for you, and apply only to that programme. Duplicate applications will be disqualified.
When can I start?
There are several start dates available for most of our UK graduate programmes.
Does it matter if I don't have a finance background?
We take applicants with degrees in any subject for most of our UK graduate programmes. We'll train you in the skills you need.
Can I defer my offer?
We'll consider deferring offers on a case-by-case basis. There are also various start dates available for most of our graduate programmes.
Do I need to have a Masters degree or MBA?
The UK programmes are open to undergraduates - you don't need a Masters degree or MBA. You can apply if you have these qualifications. We assess each application on its merits.
What do I do if I want to work for HSBC in a different country?
You should visit www.hsbc.com/studentcareers Go to our student careers website and select the country that interests you. You can view the different graduate programmes available in that country and find out how to apply.
Can I re-apply if I have applied before?
You can only re-apply for any of our programmes after six months, and you'll go through the same selection and assessment process as other candidates. Before you do, think carefully about why your last application was unsuccessful.
Will the languages I speak determine which countries I work in?
No. The business language we use at HSBC is English. If you speak a particular language, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll work in a country that speaks that language. In those countries where you need to speak the local language, we will send you on intensive language training before you take up your role.
Will I receive feedback on my application?
You will receive feedback after each stage of the applicaiton process. After the online tests, you can access a report which provides some details on your results. At the end of the telephone interview, you will be offered feedback on your responses and after attending an assessment centre, you will be sent a written report which provides you with feedback on your performance.
Do you pay expenses?
We reimburse travelling costs upto £100 incurred attending one of our assessment centres. Make sure you keep all your receipts and a claim form will be issued at the assessment centre.
I don't have a 2.1. What do I do now?
Unfortunately your degree result means that you are not eligible for any of our graduate training programmes.
I am disabled. Can you accommodate my needs during the selection process?
Please contact us to discuss your requirements. We will work with you to accommodate your needs.
Do you only accept applications from 21-year-olds?
Age is not important to us. All applicants are judged on their demonstrated abilities. Similarly, it doesn't matter which stage of your study or career you are currently at. We are keen to hear from anyone who could make a valuable addition to our business, even if you are yet to graduate or you left university years ago.
How can I find out about the progress of my application once I have submitted it online?
Once you submit your application form we'll send you details of how to log in to our application centre. From there, you can view the progress of your application.
Must I have a bank account with HSBC?
You do not need a bank account to apply, although we'll expect you to open a bank account if you join us. If you're interested in our banking services, please visit http://www.hsbc.co.uk/.
What if I do not have an A in Mathematics and English at GCSE or equivalent?
Unfortunately, you cannot apply for our programmes if you do not have the academic eligibility criteria for our programmes. You will require an A at GCSE (or equivalent) in both of these subjects with the exception of our Retail Banking & Wealth Management. For this programme - Grade C is eligible. You will be asked to provide your certificates confirming your results at the assessment centre stage.
